6 Months Old

I can't even believe that Evie is six months old today. It seems like forever and not long all at the same time. Her smile is contagious and being the one to make her smile is my daily mission. Check back soon to see her dolled up in some ridiculous Christmas outfits...

My hands are delicious

Evie hasn't started eating real food yet, but that hasn't stopped her from practicing. She puts anything and everything in her mouth, and her hands seem to be the most delicious. Here she is standing in her Einstein jumper. But instead of playing with all of the fun toys it has, she'd rather stand inside it and chew on her digits.

Our Little Butterball

Link
As we celebrate Evie's first Thanksgiving (and a more subdued celebration of my 31st year on this planet), we thought it might be a good time to put a new picture on our much ignored blog.

Evie's getting bigger, and as you can probably tell from the picture, she's a solid baby with some very kissable cheeks.

It's been a busy November for Evelyn. Meeting her Great Aunt Gale and Uncle Paul, our friends Ovi and Michelle as well as visits from both sets of grandparents. A full month to say the least.

Overall though, Evie is doing great, we're currently breaking her out of her addiction to the Miracle Blanket and sleep training seems to be working well as she's been sleeping mostly through the night.

Jill and I have much to be thankful for this year, good health, good family and friends and each other. However, most of all we're thankful for little Evelyn as she brings us joy every day.

Happy Thanksgiving!

4 Months Old

I can't believe how time is flying. In the time it has taken me to upload this picture on the blog, she's already four and a half months old! This picture totally captures what a pretty little princess she is.

Bath Time

Evie loves bath time so much that she cracks herself up when it's time to get naked. It's one of my favorite times of the day- totally makes me giggle with her.

Boca Babe

I have no idea where this track suit came from, but since Greg and I love to dress her up in silly things, we couldn't resit staging this photo. Doesn't she look ready to go play shuffle board in Boca? Good thing she thought it was as funny as we did.

The Two Silliest Hares in Action

Baby No-Hare

Little Evie is losing her hair but not her sense of humor. She continues to crack us up as she approaches 16 weeks.

Standing Strong

It must be all of the sleep Evie's getting at night, (yeah!) but at 14 weeks she's getting strong. Now if only her feet can figure out how to balance with that big belly.

12 Weeks

With the twelfth week here, it not only means Evie is outgrowing her clothes, it also means I'm now a working mom. She's a great assistant so far, and she even held in her cries while I was on conference calls in our small house. Take that, Bear.

11 Weeks

I wonder if Evie is having as much fun as we are. Here's her surprise face and her, "mom, really, another picture?" look.

Ready for some football.

Well, Evie's probably not as excited as I am, but we just had to dress her up to show some school spirit. I mean if you can't dress up your kid in ridiculous poses and outfits, what are they good for? (I'm still scarred from a certain photo shoot as a baby where I'm asleep holding a toy phone - it's bad)

A few notes on these pictures:

1. I really had nothing to do with these. It was all Jill - really.
2. We're establishing some good rooting interests early on. I'm going to try and divest poor Evelyn of my well established Philly team roots. No child deserves that much pain (I'm talking to you Phillies...way to blow it against the Cubs last night. Really solid.)
3. She's welcome to root for her dad's alma mater, but we'd like her to aspire to her mother's educational institutions - assuming that she can find a way to pay for it.
4. The pictures are pretty darn cute. Thanks to the Gibsons for the Gator pillow/blanket - especially given their Buckeye backgrounds.

10 Weeks is Serious and Silly

Evie is not quite sitting up by herself, but she's getting close. She loves the camera so far and is quick with a smile.

9 Weeks is Adorable

Time is flying by! Evie is smiling more each day...if only she was sleeping more each night:)

Chuckles From an 8-Week Old

Evie has started to full on chuckle and laugh on end while she's fed and happy. We sit and make each other laugh all day. Each stage gets more fun!

The Other Faces of Evelyn

Sometimes pictures with smiles are just too perfect, so I uploaded these 2 to show even unhappy faces are pretty darn cute.

Bath Time- Rated R

Evie discovered she likes bath time and getting clean isn't so scary after all. Notice that her hair doesn't take long to wash....it's disappearing. She's been called a boy twice this week. Come on people- would I dress a boy in pink?! Excuse this rated R picture, but it is proof she is really a girl! Some day she'll be mortified that I posted this on the internet.

Watch Out Boys

Evelyn has started to smile and flirt. Did I say watch out boys? You better believe it since Greg is going to keep her locked up until she's 30.

The Jury is Still Out

Wondering who Evelyn looks like? So are we. The jury is still out on which features of the little princess are attributed to Greg or I, so I uploaded a picture of both of us holding her. What do you think?

One month into this grand experiment

So, today we received a wonderful care package from some of our relatives up north - it included some extremely thoughtful gifts for Evie and a few things for Jill and me as well. We were immediately excited about the Utz Crab Chips - a delicacy that has unfortunately not caught on in the South (don't feel too badly for us though as Golden Flake Dill Chips are a pretty good foil to Utz' crowning achievement). Regardless, we were informed that we've been ignoring the blog, and I can't disagree, so here we are.

Evelyn hit the four week mark on Wednesday, and for the most part it has gone according to plan. Not much sleep (can't say we weren't warned), a few impressive crying sessions (again, not a surprise) but mostly a pretty incredible experience.

Jill's folks and my mother have both been up for a little while - helping out Jill once I returned to work after 2 weeks of paternity leave. She's on her own next week, so keep her in your thoughts.

I'm sure I could wax poetic on the wonders of parenthood, but I think that most everyone that reads this blog has kids of their own or has at a minimum heard others talk about their kids at length. So, I'll just go ahead an put up some pictures - the real reason that you're reading this anyways.

P.S. Our apologies for the delayed posting - the non-Facebook generation has been deprived of seeing pictures of Evelyn for the past few weeks. We'll commit to doing a better job in the future.

One happy baby

One Week Old

The first few days home from the hospital were.....interesting. Greg and I kept looking at this little one and thinking, "is she ours?!" How weird that we have a child. One week later and we are still amazed. A few things have been determined so far. 1) She hates a diaper change 2) She loves her hands and looks like she's directing an orchestra sometimes even in her sleep. 3) She loves to sleep on us, which makes for a hot mom and dad. 4) Bear loves her smell, is very protective, and looks more pathetic than ever.

Some Pictures of Little Evelyn

So, Evelyn (Evie) is about to hit the 48 hour mark. I think that we've reached out to just about everybody, but it's been a bit hectic, so hopefully you'll understand if you haven't already been reached by text, email or through the various facebook updates.

Evelyn was born at 4:06 PM on Wednesday 6/18 (for the record, I had the date pinned and have my iCal to prove it). Jill and I arrived at Piedmont Hospital at 4:30 AM and things progressed smoothly for most of the morning. At about 1:00 PM, Jill began to push. Unfortunately after 2.5 hours of pushing, it was obvious that the baby wasn't going to cooperate, so we had to schedule a c-section to get her out. A bit stressful for both of us - Jill because she'd been trying so hard for so long and me because it's the most helpless feeling in the world.

Regardless, the operation went smoothly and Evelyn was welcomed into the world with much joy. Her vitals: 8 pounds, 6.6 ounces. 21.25 inches long and her head was 14 inches in circumference (maybe why she just wouldn't come out (unfortunately, neither Jill or I were surprised that the child had a fairly large cranium - probably just has a really big brain).

Jill is recovering well - we're in the hospital until Saturday or Sunday depending on how she progresses with the recovery. Both sets of grandparents have been up to help out and we've been grateful for all of the assistance.

A few pictures for now. Certainly more to come in the future

.

Game on.

We're at the hospital, just waiting for the baby to drop down a little more. We arrived just before 5AM after Jill's contractions became very uncomfortable.

We should be welcoming our little bundle early this afternoon.

Details to follow.

Still Preggers

Yep. With under two weeks to go until my due date, I'm still pregnant.

I went to see Sex and the City movie the other night and as I was coming out of the movie theater, some high school girls asked me if they could touch my belly and take a picture for a church scavenger hunt. It's official- that was the most random thing yet.

Then Greg and I went to the mall yesterday. As he was in the Apple store I went into Brookstone to sit in a massage chair. I was just getting comfortable when the salesclerk asked me to get up. "The chair has been known to induce labor." I said, "That sounds perfect!" She glared at me to move anyway so it wouldn't happen on her watch and I got up and waddled out of the store. Blurg. Some people take all the fun out of things.

I sure am ready to not be pregnant anymore, but my daughter must have a grand sense of humor.

Best to Stay Indoors

Maybe I should just stay inside my house and not see anyone out in public so they can't make comments about how big I am and how my due date seems eons away- I know that already. Eating more ice cream dulls that little bit of info away.

But really, to the man on the church steps on Sunday that said "Blessed be your twins"....were you talking about my belly or something else?!

Stop asking Jill if she's having twins.

It's not nice. Really.

Additionally, it's really not that original. I mean if you're going to try to upset someone, why stop at twins? Why don't you ask when the triplets are due, or whether A&E is creating a TV show chronicling the sextuplets?

We had two separate incidents on Sunday by two random people.

I think we're going to catch the Phillies take on the Braves Friday night. Over/Under on the number of rude comments is 4.5. Anyone care to wager?

What not to do

Jill's been writing for a website for working women for a while now - mainly her thoughts on how to deal with being pregnant in the working world.

I thoroughly enjoyed her last article...and I'm not even pregnant.

A picture...

Jill with less than (or equal to) six weeks to go.

...and a song

I imagine that if i could write songs, or play guitar or really do anything musical, I'd probably write songs like this.

Colin Meloy_Colin Meloy Sings Live!_07_Wonder.mp3

A little song written by the lead singer of the Decemberists about his new baby.

Weird and wonderful indeed.

Baby Boot Camp

Jill and I had the pleasure of attending an all-day baby birthing class last weekend. Aside from the somewhat inappropriate “anti-pain medication” stance preached by the nurse leading the class it, was mostly a useful endeavor. Plus it ended early, which was nice. Some observations:
  • I’m a bit biased, but after sitting in a class filled with other incredibly pregnant women, I’m more convinced than ever that Jill is one hot pregnant lady (and don’t you dare ask her if she’s having twins – curse you YMCA lady).
  • I wasn’t as grossed out by the various birthing videos as I thought that I’d be. Perhaps the scene from “Knocked Up” was the first in an ongoing process of desensitizing us men.
  • That being said, I still think that a baby covered in mucus is gross.
  • So is “the plug.”
  • The girl from the couple next to us had her eyes roll back into her head and she passed out less than 30 minutes into the class (she went to the ER and checked out okay – then returning to class). I think it’s going to be a rough delivery for poor Gracie.
  • Apparently pregnancy information technology hasn’t advanced much in the past decade or so. As evidenced by the VHS tapes and Reagan-era characters that we got to watch have, care for and talk about babies.
  • We’re not supposed to be on the phone if the doctor, nurse or anybody hospital-related is in the room, so apologies in advance if we hang up on you next month.
  • No tripods allowed in the delivery room– bummer.
  • Holycrapwearegoingtohaveababyinlikeonemonth.

When it rains...

...it pours. I was doubly blessed this last weekend to have a second shower shared with Florida family and friends. This little girl is going to be one spoiled princess- but I'm sure she won't complain to be surrounded by cute clothes, toys, and all the fancy gadgets they makes these days. Thanks to all who have given Baby Girl Hare gifts- Greg and I so appreciate your generosity and anxiously wait until she gets to use them.....hopefully soon :)

A Shower that Poured

My dear friend, Melissa, threw me an amazing shower on Saturday, complete with food every pregnant woman should have (like friend green tomatoes) and friends that I count myself lucky to share it with. The baby has all the gear it needs to come home and live with us (scary!) It's hard to believe from the pictures of my baby girl belly that I technically still have over two months to go....

Greg's Reflective Happiness

While my sister, Janice, was here, we wanted to use the expert to show us how to use the Baby Bjorn. Since I've been carrying this baby for a while, I figured Greg should learn how to carry it next :) Doesn't he look super excited?!

She's got your nose - maybe

Yesterday, we went and got a 3-D ultrasound of our little girl - allowing us the unfair advantage of seeing her before she has a chance to get a look at us. Of course Jill started to try to determine where certain facial features came from (lips = Greg, nose = Jill, etc...) while I, with all due respect to my lovely bride, think that at the end of the day, she really just looks like a baby.

A few other observations:

1. She's still a girl - I think a part of Jill was still more reliant on wives tales than on modern science. Once again, science triumphs over superstition.
2. The 3-D ultrasound product is really cool - even more if you happen to own the machine and can charge what we paid for 10 minutes yesterday.
3. She's not the most cooperative baby - perhaps more camera shy than anything as she wouldn't move her hands away from her face for long enough to get a clear shot.. I'm certain that she's just preparing for the inevitable paparazzi swarm that we're going to encounter as we leave the hospital in a few months.
4. She's real. Since I don't have an actual living being in my body, this is the closest that I've gotten to really experiencing part of the pregnancy and it was very enlightening. It's much different going from the original ultrasound where you can make out shapes to this version where you see a little person with little hands and feet.
5. I'm excited to meet her. I think that I speak for both of us when I say that we're very excited to meet our little one in a few short months. For me it's probably a good thing that my terror is starting to subside and excitement and anticipation is starting to set in.

Here's a picture of our little girl with just over two months left - I also updated the main picture on the right if you haven't noticed.

Baby + Sugar = Crazy

I've been training for my glucose test for the past month....well, not really, but an onlooker might think so the way my mouth tends to gravitate towards desserts. Baby Hare loves the sugar rush and takes advantage of the space to stretch out her limbs. I don't have the results yet, but I'm thinking that I'll be fine since drinking the "sugar" drink left me feeling completely normal. Now eating a whole box of truffles (in my defense, it was small) was another story. Complete sugar buzz. Sweet.

The Sympathy Stare

I'd like to think I'm a "normal" pregnant size for 6 months along. So I traveled to San Francisco for business today and people have moved from the "Awe, cute, you're pregnant" to the "sympathy stare." The looks says something like, "So sorry you have to travel, you don't look comfortable." To top it off, at lunch today in a full blown Italian accent, the waiter said by the looks of me that I've already had plenty to eat. I think his exact words were, "The next time you eat a watermelon, don't forget to cut it up." Classy Italian. Flattery will get you everywhere.

March 23, 2007. Jill still pregnant.

Picture from a cold Easter morning in Atlanta.

Hopefully Jill will be able to provide us with some good travel stories from her trip to San Francisco this week.

Greg = 1, Crib = 0

So, it's been a while since our last update. Everything is going swell (there's a pun about Jill in there somewhere). Jill's doing great, getting a little bigger and the baby is very active - especially after some Girl Scout cookies.

We've done some painting and what is apparently known as "nesting," but what I was really intrigued about was the dreaded crib assembly.

Now, I'm no Bob Vila, but I consider myself fairly handy - especially when it comes to an Alan wrench. I chalk it up tp three years in New York and lots of IKEA furniture. However, I've heard over and over again that the two worst things about prepping for the child are the assembly of the crib and the installation of the car seat. Well, with one down, I hope that putting in the car seat is as simple as the crib. Start to finish 75 minutes with a bit of an assist from Mrs. Hare.

Perhaps we were aided because we opted to bypass the drop down front on the crib. The level of the bed adjusts, but no movable gate. So hopefully the baby doesn't care. I doubt that she will.

Still a couple months until the car seat installation. Looking forward to that.

Updated pictures of Jill's tummy to appear post-Easter. Get Excited!

Talking to Pregnant Women 101

So unless you're blind, you can tell I'm pregnant. I've discovered that once people know you're pregnant, they can't help talking to you about it. Some of it is sweet. Some of it is dreadful. Here are some of my favorite quotes from the last few weeks.

A Home Depot Lady:
"Let me look at your butt. Having girls always makes your butt big." After she looked at my butt...seriously, she checked me out. "You're good so far, but I'd watch out."

On a cruise to the Bahamas:

The server:
"Good morning baby!" And then she waved at my belly. She said nothing to me, just the belly.

From a random Paula Dean look-a-like in the elevator:
"When are you due?" "June," I said. "Oh dear, you're going to be HUGE." Calling anyone huge is always a confidence booster, right?!

From a casino waiter:
"How's your baby boy doing?" "It's a girl," I said. "No, they're wrong, that's a boy. It looks like you've stuffed a basketball under your shirt. They're wrong all the time." Expert medical advice from a cruise ship casino worker.

In Coco Cay, Bahamas:

"Let me guess, it's a boy." "Nope, it's a girl," I said, again. "Well, I'm 90% right." I guess I was the 10% they got wrong. It's amazing how people tell you what you're having even if you know.

From the persistent hair braiding population: "You want your hair braided? Braiding be good for 'de baby." Not sure how it would be good for anybody ;)

A woman in line at Publix: "Look at you! You look like you swallowed a watermelon!"

The important lesson to learn is- if you don't know the pregnant person in question, don't talk to them about being pregnant. Weather always makes for great conversation :)
